Best Surf Season (May - August)

Winter delivers the goods at Warroora Station. As the Southern Hemisphere cools, the roaring forties pump a steady stream of long-period SW groundswells into the region. Average swell heights hover around 1.6–1.7m with periods pushing 14 seconds, meaning powerful, consistent waves that wrap around the NW-facing coast. Critically, the southeast trade winds strengthen during these months, providing clean offshore conditions over 30% of the time. The result? Pumping, glassy surf with plenty of shoulder-to-head-high sets. This is the prime window for experienced surfers to score Warroora at its finest.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

Shoulder seasons offer a mixed bag of quality and quantity. March and April see lingering summer swell with average wave periods climbing to 12–13 seconds, while the trades begin to strengthen – April boasts 25% ideal wind. September and October still pack a punch with the last of the winter swell energy, but the wind becomes more fickle, with ideal conditions dropping to 10–16%. You'll find fun, rippable waves on the better days, especially when a high-pressure system parks itself to the south, generating light offshore breezes. Expect a mix of clean mornings and afternoon sea breezes to dictate the session window.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer heat brings lackluster surf to Warroora. The swell window is dominated by short-period SW pulses from distant storms, but the fetch is often weak and disorganised. Average wave heights remain around 1.4–1.5m, but periods drop to 11 seconds, resulting in smaller, choppier conditions. Worse yet, the predominant wind pattern shifts to onshore S–SW flow, with ideal offshore winds occurring less than 11% of the time. Don't expect much during the peak summer months – small, wind-affected waves are the norm, best suited for longboards or a beach day. A tropical cyclone passing well to the north can sometimes send a rare NW swell, but these events are infrequent and often accompanied by stormy winds.

June: Peak Winter Power

June delivers the most consistent and powerful surf of the year. Average height is 1.6m, period 13.9s. The swell mix shows a slight broadening: SW remains the main source (53%), but there is more contribution from WSW (12%) and even some S (4%) and SSW (19%). Still, the NW-facing spot receives the best of SW groundswell with excellent period. Offshore wind remains strong at 33%, with SE and ESE winds prevailing. The average wave height in the 1.5–2m range is common, and clean, powerful waves are the rule rather than the exception. This is the month to schedule a trip. Heavy, pumping waves with long period make for serious surfing. Be prepared for larger sets and pack a step-up board.
