Best Surf Season (May - August)

The core of the Southern Hemisphere winter delivers the most consistent window for quality surf at The Wedge. During these months, the South Atlantic storm track is fully active, generating long-period groundswells (10-11s on average) that wrap into the East-Northeast-facing beach. Critically, the percentage of offshore wind from the SW-WNW quadrant peaks at over 50% from May through July, often producing clean, groomed faces. While much of the swell arrives from the S and SSE directions, the combination of a powerful, organized swell and light offshore flow creates punchy, rippable waves in the 1-2.5m range. The best days occur when a strong frontal system pushes east of the continent and sets up a classic post-frontal SW wind regime – that is when The Wedge truly fires.

Fair Surf Season (April & September - October)

The shoulder months of April, September, and October see a gradual transition in the synoptic weather patterns. Swell heights remain solid (averaging 1.7-1.8m), and you can still find good quality waves. However, the frequency of clean offshore winds drops to the 27-38% range, and the wind direction becomes more variable. The swell period is still decent (9-10s) but less consistent than mid-winter. These months are a gamble: you may score a few days with light SW winds and a well-aligned ESE swell, but you will also contend with more onshore wind events, especially from NE and ENE. Patience is key, and morning sessions are often best.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

During the late spring and summer months, The Wedge is largely dominated by a persistent high-pressure system over the interior, which drives strong, consistent onshore winds from the NE and ENE quadrants. These are exactly the wind directions that ruin the wave quality, turning any swell into choppy, messy conditions. While the swell still arrives – mainly from the E and ESE (optimal directions) – the constant onshore breeze makes it difficult to find a clean, workable wave. Average wave periods drop to 8.7-9.4s, further reducing the power. Only on rare days when a weak trough allows a brief SW wind shift will you score fun-sized, surfable waves. This is the quietest period for dedicated wave-seekers.

October: The Last Gasp of Winter

October sees a further decline in offshore wind frequency to 27%, and the average swell period drops to 9.2s – shorter and less powerful. Swell heights are still solid at 1.8m, but the character changes. The dominant swell directions are S (15.9%), SSE (17.1%), and E (15.9%), but with the wind more often from NE (18.3%) and ENE (11.6%), the waves frequently get chopped up. The arrival of spring means more variable wind patterns, and the Southern Ocean storms are less frequent. However, occasional deep lows can still deliver strong, long-period swell with the right wind. Those days are golden – make the most of them before the summer doldrums settle in.
