The north swell fraction remains small (around 6-7%), but the offshore wind is still favourable 47-50% of the time, so the few north pulses that do arrive can be excellent. Spring (September-November) brings a gradual decline in both swell size and wind consistency. The average height dips from 2.6m in September to 2.2m in November, while ideal offshore wind frequency drops into the high 30s (36-39%). Storms in the Tasman are less organised, and onshore northerly winds become more common, ruining the quality of what little north swell appears. However, the occasional deep low or tropical interaction can still produce a memorable north-northwesterly pulse with clean southerly winds—those are the days to watch.
Low Surf Season (December - March)
Summer and early autumn are the quietest months for the breakwater. The fetch from storms shifts poleward, and the Tasman settles into a more zonal west-east flow. Average swell heights drop to around 2.0-2.1m, and periods shorten to 11.3-11.9s—still rideable but lacking the punch of winter. The critical factor is the dramatic scarcity of north swell: the combined percentage from optimal directions (N, NNE, NW, NNW) bottoms out at just 5-6% of all swell occurrences. The vast majority of waves come from the west and west-southwest, which are effectively blocked or shadowed by the northern orientation of the breakwater. Offshore wind remains decent (38-48%), so the few north swells that sneak in during synoptic patterns like coastal troughs or cut-off lows can be clean, but they are few and far between. Most days you'll find knee-high windswell at best—better suited for a paddle than a proper surf.
