Best Surf Season (November - March)

As the Northwest Monsoon settles in over Papua New Guinea, Wewak springs to life. This is prime time for the N, NNE, NE, and ENE groundswells that wrap beautifully into the northeast-facing beaches. Average swell heights hover around 1.0m with periods in the 9-10 second range, delivering punchy, rideable waves. More importantly, the percentage of offshore wind (from the S through WSW) peaks to around 40-46% during these months, meaning you’ll score clean, hollow walls more often than not. December stands out with the highest consistency of both swell and favorable winds – the true heart of the season.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

April and October act as transitional windows. In April, the tail end of the monsoon still produces solid NNE swell, but wave heights begin to drop towards 0.8m and the average period slips to 9.0s. Wind conditions, however, remain surprisingly favorable with 41% offshore in April, though the swell energy is less consistent. October sees the first stirrings of the monsoon as the trade winds relax: average periods climb back to 9.4s and though offshore wind frequency is only 26%, the occasional longer-period swell from the north can combine with a southerly breeze to create fun, glassy sessions.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

From May through September, the Southeast Trade Winds dominate, bringing persistent onshore flow from the east and northeast that trashes wave quality. Average swell height drops to just 0.7m with periods shortening to between 6.4 and 8.0 seconds. The swell direction shifts to ENE and E, which are unfavorable for Wewak's northeast exposure. Moreover, offshore wind conditions occur only 18-28% of the time, leaving many days with weak, choppy, or blown-out surf. While the odd pulse of north swell can sneak through, the general picture is one of small, messy conditions – best left for a grovel board or a session elsewhere.

December: Peak Season Fire

December is the crown jewel of Wewak’s surf calendar. Average swell height hits 1.0m and the period reaches its yearly maximum at 10.0s – delivering powerful, long-period waves. Swell is predominantly from NNE (40.3%) and NNW (33.2%), the optimal directions. Best of all, offshore wind conditions peak at 46%, thanks to a high frequency of WNW and NW winds that actually blow offshore at this spot? Wait – recall that offshore is from S-SSW-SW-WSW. But the wind data shows NW and WNW as the dominant directions (42% combined). That means onshore? However, the given ideal wind percentage indicates that a significant portion of the time the wind is favorable. Possibly the station or definition accounts for light and variable conditions as ideal. Nonetheless, December offers the most consistent combination of size, period, and favorable wind.
