Best Surf Season (April - September)

The heart of the action at Winkipop unfolds from April through September. As the Southern Hemisphere transitions into autumn and winter, the Roaring Forties kick into gear, firing consistent, long-period SW groundswells directly into the Bells Beach embayment. With the average swell holding steady around 1.3m and periods stretching to 12-13 seconds, Winkipop delivers fun, rippable to pumping waves. Crucially, this period sees the highest frequency of offshore NW-NNW-W winds, often associated with slow-moving high-pressure systems over the Great Australian Bight. The wind blows offshore over 45-55% of the time, grooming the long, right-hand walls into perfection. It's prime time for Winkipop's famous long rides.

Fair Surf Season (October & March)

October and March serve as the transitional gateways. In March, the tail end of summer fades and autumn patterns begin, with ideal wind percentages around 32%. Swell sizes remain solid, and the period stays up around 12s, but the wind consistency falters. October sees a similar pattern as spring delivers strengthening NW winds (39% ideal), but also more frequent frontal passages that can shift winds onshore. You'll find plenty of clean, solid days but also more variability. When the synoptic setup aligns – a high sitting south of the Bight – Winkipop can fire just as well as in the peak winter months.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

From November through February, Winkipop experiences its summer doldrums. The primary swell window remains active with persistent SSW-SW groundswell, but the average wave height dips slightly to 1.2m, and periods shorten to 11-11.5s. More critically, the dominant wind regime switches to SE-SSE onshore breezes, driven by the southeasterly trade wind fetch and sea breezes. Ideal offshore wind percentages plummet to just 25-32%. While the Bells Bowl can still offer fun, groveling waves on the smaller days, the classic Winkipop walls are often blown out or undersized. Look for brief windows when a strong high moves north, backing winds to the NW for a few hours – those are the moments to pounce.

April: Autumn Gold

April is a standout month with ideal wind at 45% and an average period of 12.5s. Swell direction shifts slightly to favor SW (44.9%) over SSW (33.2%), bringing more direct west-of-south energy. Wave heights are predominantly in the 1-1.5m and 1.5-2m range. The wind regime shows a significant increase in NW (7.1%) and WNW (9.9%) directions – classic offshore for Winkipop. With high pressure often settling south of the continent, mornings are glassy with light NW breezes, grooming the long-period groundswell into immaculate walls. This is prime time for long, rippable waves, second only to the winter peak.
