Best Surf Season (October - March)

The winter months bring the most consistent swell energy to Wyldewood Beach, driven by powerful North Atlantic low-pressure systems. Average swell heights range from 0.5m to 0.7m, and periods creep up to 4.1 seconds, offering slightly more organized lines than summer. However, the dominant swell directions (SW, WSW, W) align with the prevailing onshore wind regime, as WSW and SW winds blow over 25% of the time in most of these months. Ideal offshore winds from the north quadrants (N-NNO) are extremely scarce, occurring only 1% of the time in the peak months. This means most surf days are choppy and wind-affected, but the rare cold-front passage can deliver a tempestuous pulse of longer-period swell with a brief window of clean conditions.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Transitional months like April and September see a slight shift in the wind and swell patterns. Swell energy drops further to 0.4m average with periods around 3.4 seconds, still predominantly short-period windswell. The swell direction begins rotating to more SW and SSW, while winds remain mostly from the SW quadrant. Ideal offshore flow from the north is essentially non-existent (0% of the time). These months offer a marginal improvement over summer only in terms of a slightly better chance of a passing low-pressure system, but quality surf remains elusive.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer is the low point for surf at Wyldewood Beach. Average swell heights fall to just 0.3m with periods under 3.5 seconds, resulting in tiny, weak, and disorganized waves. The dominant swell directions shift even more southwesterly, with SW swell making up over 20% of the total. Wind patterns are dominated by the summer sea breeze cycle, with SW, WSW, and S winds blowing frequently. Offshore winds from the north quadrants are virtually absent (0% of the time). This creates persistent onshore, choppy conditions and extremely limited surf potential. The lake-like conditions are best left for paddleboarding or swimming.

December: Peak Winter

December ties January for the highest average swell height of the year at 0.7m, with a period of 4.1s. Swell from SW (14.3%), WSW (16.3%), and W (14.4%) dominates. This month sees the highest percentage of swell in the 1-1.5m category (e.g., 3.5m from SW, 3.6m from WSW), providing occasional rides that are 'solid' by local standards. Wind patterns are heavily weighted toward the west quadrants: W (14.6%), WSW (13.8%), and SW (10.3%). The ideal offshore wind fraction is 1%. While the majority of days are still onshore and choppy, the potential for a good day is highest in December. Strong cold fronts can swing the wind to the NW, cleaning up the face of a medium-period southwest swell. These windows are short, but when they align, Wyldewood Beach can offer punchy, fun waves in the 1-1.5m range – a true treat in what is otherwise a challenging surf spot.
