Best Surf Season (April - May)

During these months, the Indian Ocean begins to transition from summer to winter, and we see a sweet spot in the tradeoffs. Average swell heights sit in the 2.0–2.3m range with long periods (12.8–12.9s), offering a solid foundation of power. More importantly, the percentage of ideal offshore wind (E–SSE) peaks at 26–28%, the highest of the year. This combination means you’re more likely to score clean, lined-up waves at Yallingup. While the dominant swell direction remains SW–SSW, enough west in the mix and the long-period component allows the wave energy to bend around Cape Naturaliste with surprising quality. Expect fun, rippable waves with occasional pumping sessions.

Fair Surf Season (March & September - November)

These shoulder months deliver consistent swell—especially September with average 2.6m and 13.2s periods—but the wind patterns become more variable. March holds 21% offshore wind, while September–November hover around 18–19%. The swell still arrives predominantly from the SW quadrant, but with a higher proportion of WSW and W energy compared to summer. This brings more shape to the lineup, though onshore flows from the W–NW can quickly spoil conditions. When the synoptic setup aligns—often with a high-pressure system sitting south of the Bight—you can score beautiful, long-period groundswell with light easterly breezes: truly world-class windows.

Low Surf Season (June - August & December - February)

In the heart of winter (June–August), Yallingup gets hammered by powerful, XL groundswells averaging 2.6–2.8m at 12.9–13.3s. The caveat: the wind is ideal only 17% of the time, and the prevailing onshore flow (W–NW) tears apart wave faces. Moreover, the dominant swell direction is pure SW, which can be shadowed or produce messy, closeout conditions at this west-facing spot. On rare offshore days, however, you could score epic, heavy barrels. In summer (December–February), swell drops to 1.8–1.9m with shorter periods (11.8–11.9s). While offshore winds are more frequent, the small, groveling waves rarely break cleanly. It’s a flat spell punctuated by the occasional fun-size southwest groundswell.

December: Summer Lull Begins

December returns to summer conditions: average swell 1.9m at 11.9s, but with a lower proportion of usable swell directions. SW remains king at 40.6%, followed by SSW at 28.3%. West swell barely registers (0.8%). Ideal offshore wind stands at 16%, with light E–SE winds most common in the morning. Wave heights cluster in the 1–2m range, and the period is often too short to generate quality lines at Yallingup. Expect small, bumpy surf with occasional fun-sized mornings when a pulse of SW groundswell coincides with clean easterly airflow. It’s the start of the long summer grovel.
