Yo-Yos seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (December - March)

The onset of the northwest monsoon brings a shift in the tropical wind regime, and for Yo-Yos, that means a higher percentage of clean, offshore breezes. During these months, the average ideal wind window sits between 28% and 50%, with the wind frequently clocking in from the N, NNE, and NNW quadrants. Swell generation remains active across the Indian Ocean, with average heights around 1.3m and long periods of 12.6-13.4s providing plenty of power. The result is a long-running season of fun, rippable waves with the occasional pumping set when a low-pressure system tracks south of Java. Expect consistent, punchy surf and pristine lineups when the stars align.

Fair Surf Season (April & November)

These transition months see a tug-of-war between the retreating northwest monsoon and the building southeast trades. The wind becomes more fickle, with ideal surf conditions dropping to around 14-39% of the time. However, the swell quality remains solid, with average periods climbing to 13.2-13.8s and heights holding at 1.3m. Swell direction shifts more toward the SSW, which is still excellent for the break. April offers cleaner conditions early in the month, while November can see a spike in surf size as the northwest monsoon begins to re-establish. The key is to pick your windows when the light morning offshore breezes align.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

During the dry southeast monsoon, the Indian Ocean fires on all cylinders, churning out consistent groundswell with average heights of 1.5-1.7m and long periods of 13.8-14.4s. The dominant swell direction is pure SSW, perfectly hitting the Yo-Yos reef. Unfortunately, the wind regime is largely unfavorable, with the trades blowing strong from the ESE and SE, reducing the ideal surfing window to a mere 4-24%. These winds create bumpy, texturized conditions, though the powerful long-period swell can still produce rideable waves, especially if a local sea breeze provides a brief lull. This season is for the dedicated surfer willing to hunt for a clean corner when the wind gods smile.
