Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Winter unleashes the real power at The Point. As the North Atlantic pump intensifies, we see the largest average swell heights (around 1.5m) paired with long-period energy (10s) dominating the spectrum. Though the dominant swell direction is from the NE and ENE – not the ideal west – these storm-forced groundswells wrap effectively around the point, delivering punchy, well-shaped lines. The wind is offshore from the east over 60% of the time, keeping the waves clean. This is the window for the best chances of pumping, firing conditions.
Fair Surf Season (April - September)
Spring and summer bring a shift toward smaller, shorter-period swell. Average heights drop to 1.1m and periods dwindle to 7-9s. The swell direction remains stubbornly from the NE and ENE, but with less energy. However, wind quality actually improves to 73-91% offshore, meaning the waves that do arrive are often glassy and fun – perfect for groveling on the low-tide days. It’s a fair trade-off: you’ll get more consistent clean conditions, but you’ll trade power for summer softness.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
High summer is the quietest period at The Point. Average swell heights hover at just 1.0m with periods rarely exceeding 7s. The swell direction is almost exclusively from the ENE (over 60% of the time), producing weak, short-period windswell that struggles to break with any authority. While the wind is overwhelmingly offshore (86-91%), the lack of size and period makes for small, micro days. You’ll be groveling for waist-high sliders – but when a rare tropical storm or extra-tropical low aligns, the summer can serve up surprising sessions.
