The most consistent period for quality surf at Topanga occurs during the winter half of the year, driven by a strong North Pacific storm track. While the dominant swell direction is from the W and WSW — which is a compromise for this south-facing point — the combination of long-period energy (averaging 12-13s) and regular offshore winds from the north and northeast offsets the marginal swell angle. These months boast the highest percentage of ideal wind conditions, peaking at 61% in December and 59% in January. This means more glassy, groomed faces that make the most of the wrap-around swell. The trade-off is that the swell is often more powerful than the average height suggests, producing punchy, clean lines when the wind aligns.

April and September serve as transitional windows. In April, the North Pacific begins to quiet down, winds become more variable, and the frequency of ideal offshore flow drops to 44%. Swell direction shifts slightly toward the SW, which is a better angle for Topanga, but the period remains long (12s) and heights average 0.9m. September sees a similar setup: a slight uptick in south swell energy with 38% ideal wind. These months offer a mix of clean, lined-up days and choppier, onshore-driven slop. They represent a decent opportunity for those willing to chase the smaller, but more favorably angled swells.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer is the most challenging period for Topanga. The North Pacific storm machine shuts down, and the predominant swells shift to SW and WSW — an ideal direction for the point. However, the wind pattern becomes hostile: offshore flow from the north drops to a meager 20-29% frequency. Instead, onshore winds from the S and SW dominate, ruining the surface quality on what could be otherwise promising south swell windows. Average swell height hovers around 0.8m, and while the period remains solid at 12-13s, the constant winds and frequent chop make conditions mediocre. The few windows of light or offshore flow can produce surprisingly good, rippable waves, but they are rare. Patience is key during the summer months.
