Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic winter machine fires on all cylinders from October through March, delivering consistent, powerful groundswell to Troia's southwest-facing beaches. Average swell heights peak at 1.9-2.0 m in December and January, with long period waves averaging 12-13 seconds. The combination of strong extratropical lows spinning up in the North Atlantic and a favorable high-pressure ridge often sets up offshore easterly to northeasterly winds, keeping the surf clean and lined up. This is prime time for Troia, when the swell direction aligns from the SSW to W and winds blow from the N to E quadrant, creating perfect offshore conditions. Expect pumping, firing waves in the 1.5-2.5 m range on the best days, with the occasional XL pulse exceeding 2.5 m.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
April and September are transitional months, offering a mix of fading winter energy and the first hints of autumn activity. Swell heights average around 1.5 m, with periods dropping to 11 seconds. While the Atlantic still sends consistent swell, the wind patterns become less reliable. The percentage of ideal offshore wind ranges from 32-35%, as the trade wind pattern starts to establish. Still, when a solid southwest swell meets a morning easterly breeze, Troia can dish out fun rippable waves in the chest-to-head-high range. These months are a gamble but can reward the patient surfer with uncrowded sessions.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer brings a dramatic drop in both swell size and wind quality. From May through August, average swell heights hover around 1.0-1.2 m with periods sinking to 9-10 seconds, resulting in mostly small, weak, groveling waves. The dominant swell direction shifts to NW, which is not ideal for Troia's SW exposure, and the wind regime becomes dominated by strong northerly and northwesterly winds - onshore or side-onshore for this spot. The ideal offshore wind percentage plummets to 27-31%, leaving only the rare day when a light easterly breeze coincides with a small pulse of southwesterly swell. Overall, summer is a time for longboard or foamies, or just waiting for the autumn return.
