Best Surf Season (November - February)

Caswell Beach is at its best when the North Atlantic storm machine is firing. From November through February, average swell heights sit in the 4-5ft (1.2-1.6m) range and average periods stretch to 9-10.7s, giving this south-facing Gower beach the power and consistency it lacks in summer. Most of the energy arrives as WSW/W groundswell, but the SSE through SW sector is much better represented in winter, and that direct southern angle is what Caswell needs. Depending on the phase of the NAO, the storm track can either stay zonal and bring the classic UK W/SW soup or bend south and deliver more S/SE angled swell. The real filter is wind: only 12-15% of the time blows offshore from N/NNW, usually behind cold fronts, so the best sessions are short, cold and precious. With water cold and air often near freezing, this is committed winter surfing, but it is also the most rewarding time of year.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

The shoulder months offer the best balance between surf size and comfort. March and October still average around 4ft (1.2m), while April and September ease to 3ft (0.9m) with periods in the 8-9s bracket. The Atlantic storm track is less reliable, so consistency drops, but lighter winds, fewer big blows and more manageable air and water temperatures make it easier to find clean, rippable waves. October is particularly interesting because the share of favourable SSE-S-SW swell reaches its yearly high, even if the period is still catching up to winter standards.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer is the quiet season at Caswell. As the Azores High builds and the storm track retreats to the north, average swell heights drop to 2-3ft (0.7-0.8m) and average periods shrink to 7.4-8.3s. The swell direction becomes overwhelmingly WSW/W, too far west for the beach to focus the energy, and the prevailing winds are increasingly from the SW/W, often onshore or sideshore. Waves are mostly small, soft windswell, best chased at dawn before the sea breeze picks up. Water temperatures peak at 18.0°C in August, so if you are happy to ride a longboard in gentle conditions, the summer months still have their charm.
