Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, and Freshwater West sits right in the firing line. This west-southwest facing beach is perfectly exposed to the long fetch of the Atlantic, and the winter storm track drives wave heights up to the 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) range with powerful 10-14 second periods. The swell rose is heavily loaded in the SW, WSW and W quadrant, which is exactly what this stretch of Pembrokeshire coast needs. The catch is wind: the same low-pressure systems that pump out the swell also throw onshore SW/W gales across the beach. Ideal offshore flow from the NNE through E quadrant only arrives around 16-19% of the time. But when a strong high over Scandinavia links up with a deepening Atlantic low, Freshwater West turns on and delivers some of the heaviest, most memorable surf of the year.

Fair Surf Season (April, May and September)

Spring and early autumn are transitional windows at Freshwater West. As the polar front lifts north in April and May, average swell heights shrink to around 4ft (1.2m) with shorter, punchier periods in the 8-second range. However, the Azores High starts to ridge in, and the percentage of clean offshore wind jumps to roughly 26% - the best of any season outside winter. This creates fun, rippable, occasionally glassy conditions, especially on the low-tide banks. September is the mirror image: the Atlantic begins to wake up, average swell increases to about 4ft (1.2m), and the water is still warm from summer. It is a time of building energy and the potential for late-season hurricane swell sneaking up from the south.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quietest stretch of the year. The North Atlantic storm tracks retreat toward Iceland, leaving Freshwater West with average swells of only 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) and short-period windswell. The prevailing summer regime is dominated by WSW and SW winds, which are directly onshore and ruin the shape of the waves. Ideal offshore wind percentages drop to 15-18%, and a daily sea breeze often kicks up an afternoon chop. The good news is that the water warms to around 16-17°C (60-63°F), and dawn patrol with a light easterly breeze can still produce smooth, playful surf. But for raw power and consistency, summer is all about waiting for the first autumn swells to arrive.
