January: The North Atlantic in Full Roar

The New Year arrives with the Atlantic storm machine running at full tilt. Average swell heights sit around 7.2ft (2.2m) with a mean period of 11.3 seconds, so the ocean is almost never undersized. W and WSW swells combine for 43.6% of the directional spread, and adding in WNW and SW takes the whole western window past 53%. Much of that energy sits in the 3.5-8ft (1-2.5m) range, with occasional sets pushing well into XL territory. Air temperatures hover near 6.6°C, water temperature is 9.0°C, and precipitation runs around 3.8mm/day - in other words, proper winter gear is essential. The downside is the wind: strong WSW and SW winds are common, and true offshore E/NE winds arrive only about 21% of the time. When they do, especially after a cold front passes, the long-period W groundswell lines up as clean, hollow peaks across Saunton's sandbars. This is peak season for committed surfers, not casuals.
