July: Flat-Calm Potential

July is the absolute low point of the Woolacombe surfing calendar. Average swell height bottoms out at 3.3ft (1.0m) and period at 7.9s, right on the edge of short-period, choppy conditions. Swell direction is almost comically consistent, with W at 48.8 percent and WSW at 23.3 percent, but most of that energy is small. The lack of strong Atlantic storms means long-period groundswell bands are scarce. Wind is the bigger problem. The ideal offshore window is only 9 percent, while western onshore winds from WSW, W, WNW and NW make up over 53 percent of the wind distribution, often ruffling the small waves into mush. When the UK bakes under a high-pressure block, light easterlies can groom some tiny workable longboard waves, and the 17C water plus summer air make it fun. But manage expectations: this is flat-season maintenance, not a surf trip destination. The good news is the sandbars are often fat and waiting for autumn.
