Belmar seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The Jersey Shore's prime window runs from October through March as the North Atlantic low-pressure track becomes more active and Belmar's east-southeast exposure lines up with a healthy mix of ENE, E, ESE and SE swell. Average surf heights hover in the 4ft (1.2m) range and periods generally climb into the 7-8s range, with occasional larger pulses when strong coastal storms spin up. This is also the time of year when the North Atlantic Oscillation tends to steer the storm track toward the Mid-Atlantic; negative NAO phases in particular can fire up nor'easters that align perfectly with Belmar's beach. Offshore winds out of the west and northwest become more frequent, especially during the heart of winter, leaving the sandbars relatively clean and lined up. This is when the spot delivers its most consistent combination of size, period and shape.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
April and May see the ocean's average energy start to back off slightly, but the strong east-southeast component of the spring swell window can still deliver rideable, fun-sized waves between cold fronts. September is the wildcard: the Atlantic tropical season can send long-period ESE/SE swell into Belmar even as the background summer smallness lingers. These shoulder months can turn on quickly when a hurricane or strong low-pressure system parks off the Southeast coast, but they can also leave you waiting for the next pulse. Warm water and lighter westerly winds make these months highly appealing for grovelers and longboarders.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is Belmar's low season. The North Atlantic storm track retreats north and the prevailing pattern is dominated by small, largely wind-generated SSW/SSE systems. Average heights drop to 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m), periods hover around 7s, and the combination of small south swell and sea breeze often leaves the beach looking more like a lake than a surf spot. On the rare occasion a tropical system or an oddly timed low-pressure system lines up, summertime can deliver some fun, accessible waves, but structurally the months of June through August produce the least consistent surf.
