Blacks Beach is a legendary, high-performance sandbar playground that stretches for nearly a half-mile along Torrey Pines City Beach, consistently delivering the most powerful surf in the region. Its reputation as a big-wave magnet is no accident—the La Jolla Submarine Canyon acts as a deepwater funnel, channeling raw, open-ocean swell directly into the shorebreak to produce thick, hollow peaks. Three distinct zones define the lineup. South Peak is a freight-train left that demands respect, offering heavy, critical drops and extended walls. Middle Peak is the most versatile, breaking both ways but favoring the lefts, which tend to unload with more shape and speed. North Peak is a short, punchy right that rewards a quick paddle and an aggressive takeoff, with the potential for a tight, exhilarating barrel. The entire setup is dynamic sand over a shifting bottom, but the offshore canyon remains the constant architect, sculpting clean, wedge-like faces that turn even average swell into memorable sessions.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (December - February)

The North Pacific delivers its finest work during the heart of winter. As the Aleutian Low strengthens across the Gulf of Alaska, a steady stream of extratropical storms pushes long-period W and WNW groundswells toward Southern California. At Blacks Beach, the west-facing exposure lines up perfectly with this swell window, producing consistent, powerful waves. December through February stands out as the peak of the calendar, with average swell heights around 1.0-1.1m (3-3.6ft) and average wave periods locked in the powerful 12-13s range. What really sets these months apart is the wind. High pressure building over the Great Basin and interior deserts creates clean offshore flow from the ENE through SE quadrants 40-50 percent of the time. That combination of reliable west-northwest swell and glassy morning wind makes for the most surfable days of the year.
