Chatarra seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (December - February)
Chatarra is an exposed north-northeast-facing beach, which means its ideal swell window is N, NNE, NE and NNW - exactly the directions that are rarest in the local statistics. Even so, the heart of the winter months offers the best compromise: average surf heights sit near 3ft (0.9m), average periods climb to 6.2s, and the E/ENE component of the trade-wind spectrum is at its strongest. True north groundswell remains a long shot, but when a strong Atlantic low or cold front pushes into the tropics, Chatarra can finally show some shape.
Fair Surf Season (March - May & September - November)
The shoulder seasons are a classic trade-off. March through May and September through November see the percentage of ideal offshore wind improve - especially in May (43%) and October (40%) - creating cleaner, more organized surfaces despite the small 2-3ft (0.6-0.9m) average swell. Swell direction tilts further into the ESE/SE quadrant, which is poor for the NNE-facing beach, but the lighter winds and occasional tropical systems offer enough windows for a fun surf. This is the time to pick your days carefully.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the low point at Chatarra. The Azores-Bermuda high cranks up the easterly trades, and E/ESE windswell becomes nearly constant, but the angles are wrong and the periods are short at around 6.0s. Ideal offshore wind drops to 21-26%, and the sea surface is often bumpy with a persistent cross-shore current. Add water temperatures climbing to 29°C and frequent afternoon showers, and you have a recipe for small, grindy windslop. Only a well-placed hurricane swell can truly save the summer.
