Gold Beach

Gold Beach stretches out as a lengthy, exposed beachbreak where the Rogue River meets the ocean. The short south jetty offers a bit of shelter from north wind, sculpting both rights and lefts over shifting sand. When the stars align, it can deliver some enjoyable, if fleeting, rides. But this is a fickle stretch—heavy currents, relentless shorepound, and a notable seal population keep things interesting. The region is also home to sharks, with recent encounters reported, and keep an eye out for renegade windsurfers carving through the lineup.

Best Surf Season (November - March)

The winter months are the bread and butter for Gold Beach. With the Aleutian Low cranking and a relentless parade of North Pacific extratropical cyclones driving toward the Pacific Northwest, average swell heights jump to 8-9ft (2.4-2.7m) with dominant periods in the 12-13s range. The west-southwest-facing beach lines up best with the W and WSW swells that ride in under long-period groundswell, while the frequent frontal winds from the south and southeast can chop things up. The real winners are the post-frontal windows when high pressure builds and winds flip from the NNE/ENE offshore quadrants, grooming those powerful WNW/W lines into clean, rippable waves. It's cold, wet and stormy, but this is where Gold Beach earns its reputation as a heavy winter wave destination.
