February is arguably the most consistent month of the year for good surf at Hobe Sound. The average holds at 4ft (1.2m) with a 7.7s period, and the optimal swell quadrants (NNE, NE, ENE and E) account for just over 60 percent of the wave energy. The NE quadrant is the workhorse, contributing 17.1 percent of all swell, with nearly 4.5 percent in the 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) range - the kind of powerful, punchy surf that gets attention. Ideal offshore winds jump slightly to 22 percent, the highest of the winter, which means a better chance of linking a clean west-southwest flow with a solid NE groundswell. The cooler water temperature, 23.1°C, combines with late-winter cold fronts to keep the atmosphere feeling sharp, and precipitation is relatively low at 2.16 mm/day. This is the month when the stars align most often: a heaving NE swell, offshore winds and walled-up lines on the sandbars.
