Hookipa Beach Park seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - March)
The North Pacific winter machine switches on in November and reaches a crescendo from December through February. Average swell heights jump to 1.8-2.0m (5.9-6.6ft) and periods sit in the 11.6-12.6s range, with the swell rose dominated by NNW energy and backed by solid NW and N pulses. Combined, those optimal directions account for roughly 30-50% of the wave energy at Hookipa during the core winter months. The spot's NNW exposure lines up with the dominant winter swell window, producing the powerful, hollow, world-class waves the beach is known for. Offshore wind windows are also at their most reliable, with 21-32% of observations coming from the S/SW/WSW range, especially in January.
Fair Surf Season (April, May, September, October)
These transitional months offer a mixed bag. April and May see the Aleutian Low retreat and the North Pacific High strengthen, pulling the dominant swell direction back to the ENE/NE trade-wind window and dropping wave periods to 10-10.6s. September and October, meanwhile, are the mirror image: trades still blow hard, but the first long-period NNW/N groundswells return and ideal offshore wind percentages climb back to 27-29%. Surf quality in these months depends almost entirely on timing - catch a NNW pulse with dawn light winds and Hookipa can still deliver chest-to-head-high waves, but spend too much time chasing the average and you will find plenty of lumpy, trade-blown days.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the true low season at Hookipa. Average swell heights drop to 1.3m (4.3ft), periods shorten to 8.8-9.5s, and ENE/E direction swell dominates more than 90% of the time. The NNW/NW/N optimal swell window nearly disappears, leaving a small, short-period surf that is easily chopped up by the E/ESE trade winds. Ideal offshore winds fall to just 12-17%. August is the pick of the summer months because the first hints of autumn north swells begin to appear and the wind is slightly less relentless, but overall this is a time for longboards, small-wave equipment, and low expectations.
