Best Surf Season (November - March)
La Selva's winter window is the prime time for surf. As the North Atlantic storm track shifts southward, strong extratropical cyclones generate consistent N, NNE and NE groundswell that lights up this north-facing coastline. Statistically, November through March delivers the largest average surf, with wave heights around 5ft (1.5m) or better and average periods of 8.7-9.1s. The directional distribution is also heavily weighted toward La Selva's favourite swell directions: the optimal N/NNE/NE/NNW band accounts for roughly 50-63% of the total swell during these months. The catch is that dominant ENE/E trade winds often blow cross-shore, and ideal offshore winds from S/SSW/SW only appear 20-33% of the time. When a cold front or high-pressure wedge cleans things out and swings the wind into the south, La Selva turns into a powerful, walled-up break.
Fair Surf Season (April - May, September - October)
The shoulder months are a trade-off: size backs off, but the wind clock improves. April and May still see occasional N/NE pulses, though the average height drops to around 4ft (1.2m) and periods shorten. September and October mark the beginning of the next transition, with the average wave period climbing back to 8.1-8.9s and the NE swell share increasing as the Atlantic becomes more active. Ideal winds are more common, up to 40-51% of the time, meaning smaller waves are more likely to be clean, rippable and fun. This is the time to grab a shortboard and chase the better-shaped days without winter's heavy onshore pressure.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the doldrums at La Selva. The North Atlantic storm track retreats and the surf becomes dominated by short-period E/ENE trade windswell. Average wave heights fall to around 3-4ft (1.1-1.2m) and average periods drop to 6.1-6.4s. The N/NNE/NE/NNW swell window nearly disappears, leaving mostly small, chopped-up, groveling conditions. Trade winds blow strongly from the east and ideal offshore wind days are limited to 25-45% of the time depending on the month. Water temperatures climb to nearly 29°C and the ocean feels like a warm bath, but the lack of groundswell keeps La Selva in summer hibernation, unless a tropical storm or hurricane sends in a burst of longer-period easterly swell to break the monotony.
