Today's Surf Conditions at Mavericks
Spot Overview & Description
Mavericks is the kind of place that lives in the periphery of a big-wave surfer’s consciousness—a reef off Pillar Point that commands only the most elite, experienced, and utterly fearless. This is not a spot for the faint of heart or the uninitiated. The wave is predominantly a right, though a handful of visionaries have been known to look left into the abyss as well. What sets Mavericks apart is the take-off: an impossibly hollow, jacking drop that throws you onto a slab of rock-strewn water just in front of the Boneyard, where house-sized boulders lurk beneath the surface like sleeping giants. From that critical moment, the wave unfolds into a long, towering wall—massive and relentless—that peels across the reef before finally exhaling into a deep, forgiving channel. It is a wave of pure, raw power, demanding total commitment with every turn.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (November - February)
The North Pacific roars to life in late autumn, and Mavericks is one of the first spots in California to feel the difference. November through February sees the most consistent combination of size, period and offshore wind, with average swells holding around 6ft (1.8-1.9m) and periods in the powerful 12.4-13.2s band. When the Aleutian Low couples with a positioning high pressure ridge over the West Coast, the N/NE offshore flow grooms the face and the reef at Half Moon Bay starts doing its terrifying work. December, January and February offer the highest probability of XL, charging-level surf.
