Oceanside seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - February)
The winter months are when Oceanside truly earns its reputation. As the Aleutian Low deepens over the North Pacific, the storm track aligns southwest-facing Oceanside with a steady supply of long-period W and WSW groundswell. Average wave heights sit around 1.0-1.1m (3-3.5ft), with periods of 12.4-12.6s, and the upper end of the distribution produces real 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) waves. Just as importantly, the same larger-scale pattern delivers the most reliable offshore wind windows of the year: ideal NE-to-E flow is present 42-52% of the time between November and February. When a winter high-pressure system settles inland, Oceanside turns into a clean, lined-up, rippable gem.
Fair Surf Season (October, March - April)
The shoulder months offer plenty of swell but demand patience. October sees the North Pacific begin to wake up, with first proper W groundswells arriving as the summer onshore regime weakens. March and April still benefit from strong winter-type W/WSW swells, but the sea breeze returns with a vengeance and ideal offshore wind drops to 18-28%. This is a game of dawn patrols and high-pressure interludes. Still, when the right combination emerges, long-period swell can coincide with sunny skies and light offshore wind - that is when the great waves really come to life.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
Summertime at Oceanside is all about Southern Hemisphere groundswell and a stubborn Pacific High. Swell directions remain excellent - mostly SSW, SW, and WSW - but energy is modest, with the bulk of the surf stuck in the 2-3ft (0.5-1m) range. The bigger problem is wind: the afternoon W/SW sea breeze is nearly relentless from May through August, and ideal offshore wind occurs only 4-11% of the time. Expect small, bumpy, groveling conditions, with the occasional fun dawn session when the long-period SW swell beats the wind to the beach.
