Sandy Beach seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (November - March)

Sandy Beach's west-southwest exposure lines up perfectly with the dominant winter swell window from SSW through W. During this five-month stretch the North Pacific storm track is in full roar, with average wave heights running between 8-10ft (2.4-3.0m) and periods stretching into the 11-12 second range. Meanwhile, high pressure over the interior delivers offshore flow from the NNE through E quadrant 50-55 percent of the time, keeping the faces clean and hollow. This is the money season for Sandy Beach.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September - October)

The shoulder months see a transition between winter and summer synoptic regimes. April still packs 7ft (2.2m) of average swell with a high percentage of SSW-WSW energy, but the offshore wind reliability begins to fade. May and September offer smaller but highly directional SW-WSW swell, often groomed by morning offshore flow before sea breezes kick in. October is the wildcard: the storm track is reawakening and swell heights climb back to 8ft (2.5m), yet wind consistency is less predictable than in winter.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quietest chapter at Sandy Beach. Average swell heights drop to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m), periods hover around 10 seconds, and the prevailing wind pattern shifts to the WNW-NW, which is poor for surf quality at this west-southwest-facing beach. The swell that does arrive is still mostly SSW-WSW in direction, but the combination of smaller energy and weaker offshore flow means a lot of soft, lumpy days. The few clean sessions require a classic summer easterly eddy or a passing front to align the winds.
