Scripps seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (November - March)

The North Pacific storm track swings south through late autumn and winter, and Scripps lights up as a result. Average wave heights run 1.0-1.1m (3.3-3.6ft), with the dominant swell energy coming from a consistent west-to-west-southwest window. Long-period 12-13s groundswell is the rule, and cold fronts dropping into Southern California often leave behind clean offshore ENE/E/ESE winds in their wake, especially during Santa Ana events. December and January post the highest share of ideal wind at 43%, while November and February are not far behind. This is the prime window for lined-up, rippable surf at the Scripps reef and beach break.

Fair Surf Season (April and October)

April still carries the tail-end of winter's swell energy, averaging 1.1m (3.6ft) at 13.3s, but the prevailing North Pacific wind machine begins to build, and ideal wind drops to just 14%. October is the mirror image: the first autumn low-pressure systems reawaken the Pacific, but average heights are still modest at 0.9m (3.0ft), and the coastline is still dominated by plenty of onshore W/NW flow. Both months offer great sessions when the timing is right, but consistency is the tradeoff.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

By late spring, the Aleutian storm track retreats and Scripps shifts to smaller, more southerly angled SSW/SW swells. Average heights hover around 0.9-1.0m (3.0-3.3ft), and while there are plenty of fun-sized 0.5-1.5m waves, the daily thermal sea breeze turns on early. Prevailing west-to-northwest winds dominate the wind rose and ideal wind plummets to just 1-7%. Summer surf is not nonexistent, but it demands dawn patrols and a low expectation for perfection.
