Best Surf Season (October - March)

From October through March, Ventnor Pier sits squarely in the path of the North Atlantic storm track. Cold fronts and nor'easters spin up low pressure off the Mid-Atlantic, sending ESE, SE, SSE and S swell into this south-southeast-facing beach. The average swell height holds in the 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) range with periods mostly in the 7-8s band, and the dominant wind pattern shifts to the northwest quadrant - WNW, NW and NNW - which blows cleanly offshore and keeps the surface relatively smooth. This is the most consistent and most surfable part of the year, especially when the NAO goes negative and the polar jet buckles south.

Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)

The shoulder months are a mixed bag. April and May see a growing tendency toward S/SSE/SW winds as the land heats up, which brings plenty of south swell but also a lot of onshore texture. The average wave height drops to 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m), and period remains in the 7s, so it is more about finding a sheltered morning or a window between sea breezes. September is the best of the fair months: tropical moisture and early autumn cold fronts lift the average period to 8.4s and the average height back to 4ft (1.2m), giving Ventnor cleaner, longer-period ESE/SE swell before the full winter fury arrives.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the low season at Ventnor Pier. The Bermuda High becomes the dominant feature, driving southwest and south winds onto the coast and locking in the daily sea breeze. Swell is almost always from the south through southeast - the right direction for the spot - but it is thermal windswell, not groundswell. Average heights sink to around 3ft (0.9m) with 7s periods, and the onshore flow makes it lumpy and weak. If a hurricane or tropical storm drifts into the western Atlantic, however, those same summer months can suddenly produce a clean, long-period ESE/SE swell, reminding everyone that Ventnor's season is never truly dead.
