Wabasso seasonal overview
Wabasso faces east-northeast on the Florida Atlantic coast, so it is hardwired to take the brunt of any swell that rolls in from the E, ENE, NE or NNE. But because those same directions are onshore, the magic here is all about timing. The winter months deliver a steady stream of cold fronts and offshore flow that turns the raw northeast energy into something you can actually surf.
Best Surf Season (October - March)
From October through March, the Atlantic storm track cranks up and the average surf heights climb to 0.8-1.0m (2.5-3.5ft) with periods that regularly sit in the powerful 8-10s range. The biggest, most consistent swells come from the E and ENE quadrants, and when high pressure slides by to the north, ripable offshore winds out of the SSW, SW, WSW and W clean up the lines. Ideal wind statistics peak in December, January and February, making this the most reliable window to score on the Space Coast.
Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)
April and May bring warmer water and occasional E/NE groundswell, but the trade wind regime begins to dominate and the ideal wind percentages drop sharply. September, in contrast, marks the peak of hurricane season and is a wild card; the average numbers are modest, but a well-tracked tropical system can fire pure, long-period E/ENE swell through the region.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
The summer months are the doldrums for Wabasso. Average wave heights drop to 0.5-0.6m (1.5-2ft), periods hover near 8s, and the ESE/SE trade winds blow onshore almost constantly, leaving the beach small and messy. Only an opportunistic hurricane swell or a passing tropical wave can rescue the summer months, and those are anything but consistent.
