Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The winter half-year delivers the most consistent surf to Vouliagmeni's south-facing shore. With average swell heights hovering between 0.7m and 0.9m and periods climbing to 4.5-5.1s, the Mediterranean low-pressure track fires up fetch across the Ionian and Libyan Seas. The dominant swell directions are SSW and NNE – a classic split. While NNE swell is blocked by the Attica coast, the SSW pulses wrap in nicely. Offshore winds from the N and NNW blow 20-22% of the time, grooming the waves into punchy, rideable lines. This is the window for fun-sized to solid surf in the 0.5-1.5m range, with occasional pumping days.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Spring and autumn see a notable drop in average swell size – April averages 0.6m with a period of only 4.5s, while September sits at 0.5m and 4.3s. The percentage of ideal winds remains decent (18-20%), but the smaller, shorter-period energy often results in weak, groveling conditions. The SSW quadrant still contributes swell, but it's mostly under 1m. Onshore flows from the south increase, making quality inconsistent. Still, feel-good micro sessions are possible when the Etesian winds relax and a small pulse aligns.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The summer months are the slowest for Vouliagmeni. Average swell height drops to a meager 0.4-0.5m and period sits at 3.9-4.3s – that’s choppy, low-energy windswell territory. The NNE windswell dominates (often blowing onshore for the spot), while the ideal offshore wind windows shrink to just 12-16%. Persistent Etesian winds from the north bring strong, dry northerlies that create clean conditions but blow out the minimal swell. Occasional south pulses can produce waist-high waves, but they are often accompanied by onshore SSW winds. For the dedicated surfer, the early mornings offer the best chance – glassy periods before the thermal gradients kick in. Expect mostly micro to small, groveling surf.
