Best Surf Season (October - March)

At Oum El Bouir, the surf year is driven by the North Atlantic. From October through March, the mid-latitude storm track aims more long-period energy toward Western Sahara, and the beach finally receives the groundswell it needs. Average swell heights sit in the 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) range, periods climb to 10-12s, and the often strong offshore NE trades are at their lightest and most workable. When the NAO dips negative, the storm track shifts southward and this stretch of African coastline gets even more consistent, powerful swell. This is the window for the best, most hollow beach break sessions of the year.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

The shoulder months offer a real trade-off. April, May, and September still see rideable swell, but average periods shrink to 8-10s and the swell becomes more north-based, with less west in the mix. The offshore NE/ENE trade wind strengthens through spring, compressing the clean-surf windows. September is the mirror-image transition, with the trades still strong but the first hints of longer-period autumn groundswell beginning to appear.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

June through August is the annual low at Oum El Bouir. The Azores High parks over the subtropical North Atlantic and drives a relentless NNE trade wind that blows 20-40kph for days on end. Swell is abundant but short-period, with average periods of just 7-7.5s, and the wave quality metrics collapse. The result is a long stretch of bumpy, disorganized, windblown surf, with only rare dawn-patrol windows offering anything close to clean conditions.
