Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (April - October)

The dry season brings a consistent and powerful pulse of Indian Ocean swell to Airport, driven by the southeast trade winds that set up a persistent high-pressure system south of Australia. During these months, the wind machine cranks in your favor: offshore flow from the east and southeast dominates, keeping the west-facing beach glassy for most of the day. Swell direction shifts from SSW to SW, wrapping nicely into the bay with long-period groundswell averaging 13–14 seconds. Wave heights climb from 1.7m in April to a peak of 2.2m in July and August, offering plenty of solid, rippable walls and even some pumping 2m+ sets on the better days. The trade-wind inversion suppresses local sea breeze, so the early morning windows are consistently pristine. September and October hold the best combo of offshore wind frequency (over 75%) and consistent SSW swell, making this the true prime time for quality surf.

Fair Surf Season (November - March)

As the monsoon trough shifts north, the winds become unreliable and often swing to the west and northwest, bringing onshore conditions to Airport. The average ideal wind percentage drops to between 18% and 60%, meaning you'll have to pick your windows carefully. Swell energy remains solid, with average heights of 1.6–1.7m and periods of 12–13 seconds, but the direction rotates more toward SW and even SSW, which still works given the beach's west exposure. The real challenge is the wind: westerly and northwesterly flows from passing tropical depressions and low-pressure systems over the Indian Ocean can trash the surface. Still, when a cold front pushes through and the wind briefly backs to the east, the combination of powerful SW groundswell and clean conditions can produce memorable sessions. November offers a transitional blend, while December through February see the highest onshore wind percentages, making early mornings before the seabreeze kicks up the best bet.

Low Surf Season (June - August? Actually no, that's best. So maybe no low? But we can state that the months outside the best are fair, but there's no true low because swell always present. According to instructions, we can describe a general low if poor, but here it's not. So I'll add a note that there is no prolonged low season, but the least favorable period is December-February due to wind.)

Unlike many Indonesian spots that go flat during the wet season, Airport benefits from a constant stream of Southern Ocean swell that keeps wave heights above 1.5m year-round. However, the months of December, January, and February are the most challenging due to the dominance of onshore westerly winds. During this period, the average ideal wind percentage plummets to 18–24%, and the wind rose shows over 40% of the time blowing from the west and northwest at 10–20 kph, which chops up the surface. Swell height and period remain decent (1.6–1.7m, 12–13s), but the wave quality suffers. It's not a true low surf season in terms of size, but rather a low quality season where you have to be patient for the rare easterly wind event. If you time it right, you can still score fun-sized waves with offshore winds, but consistency is low.
