Balangan sits in a stunning bay on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, a laid-back enclave where the natural charm still outshines the development. Its relaxed vibe draws a lively mix of locals and travelers, creating an easy-going atmosphere perfect for both surfing and soaking in the scenery. The wave here is a left-hander breaking over coral reef, firing best when a Southwest swell rolls in. Balangan handles swell up to about 4 feet (1.2 meters) and prefers low to mid tide, though it can stay rideable on the high. On smaller days, it offers playful rides for intermediate surfers, while bigger SW pulses transform it into a legit challenge for the experienced crew. Be aware, though, that the wave can get sectiony and even close out on certain swells, so reading the conditions is key. Southeast wind is the sweet spot, grooming the shape for overhead-plus days that deliver serious potential. When it’s cranking, Balangan draws a keen mix of surfers—a solid environment for leveling up, but expect a competitive pack eager to drop into the sets.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (May - September)

The heart of the dry season brings Balangan to life. The southeast trade winds strengthen, funneling a consistent stream of E to ESE offshore flow across the Bukit Peninsula. Simultaneously, the Southern Ocean cranks up its production of long-period SSW to SW groundswells. The average swell height climbs to a solid 1.9–2.2m with periods exceeding 14s, delivering powerful, clean lines that wrap beautifully around the NW-facing reef. Expect pumping, firing sets in the 1.5–2.5m range, especially during June through August. The wind is offshore 40–60% of the time, but in reality, the morning window is almost glassy – dawn patrols score epic conditions before the trades freshen. This is prime time for rippable walls and heavy barrels.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

The shoulder months are transition periods where the monsoon is shifting. In April, the west monsoon retreats and the easterlies begin to dominate, but the swell is still building from the Indian Ocean. Average wave height sits around 1.7m with a period of 13.8s – fun, good, solid. October sees the opposite transition: the easterlies still blow strong (86% ideal wind frequency) but the swell starts to back off. Both months offer excellent conditions when a fresh SSW swell coincides with clean offshore winds, but consistency is not as high. You'll get plenty of fun-sized, groveling days mixed in with the occasional pumping session.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

The west monsoon rules from November through March, bringing increased cloud cover, rain, and a shift in the prevailing wind to the W and WNW – directly onshore for Balangan. While the spot still receives plenty of SSW to SW swell (average 1.6–1.7m, period 12.4–13.3s), the frequency of clean offshore wind plunges to 18–29%. Strong westerly wind, often in the 20–40kph range, creates choppy, messy conditions. The good news is that when a synoptic high-pressure system stalls south of Australia and the winds swing back to the east, you can still score punchy, rideable waves. But those windows are brief and unpredictable – this is the least reliable time of year for quality surf at Balangan.
