Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (June - September)

The heart of the dry season locks in consistent, long-period groundswells from the southern Indian Ocean. Average swell heights push 2m+ with periods eclipsing 14 seconds, delivering powerful, organized lines that wrap around the Bukit Peninsula. The dominant trade wind flow from the southeast becomes increasingly offshore as it funnels across the landmass, grooming the faces into glassy perfection. This is the window when Uluwatu lives up to its world-class reputation—pumping barrels and rippable walls become the daily norm.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & October - November)

These shoulder months offer a tantalizing mix of high-quality offshore wind windows and slightly smaller, though still very rideable, swell. April and October boast the highest percentages of ideal offshore wind—over 70%—but the swell averages dip a bit below the mid-year peak. The storm tracks are transitioning, so while consistency might drop, the reward for nailing a clean day is uncrowded perfection. May and November see a nice balance of size and wind reliability, making them solid second-tier months for a trip.

Low Surf Season (December - March)

Austral summer brings the monsoon, swinging winds to the west and northwest for a significant chunk of time. Onshore, choppy conditions plague the lineup more often than not, with less than 40% ideal wind most months. Swell is still generated from the southwest, but the quality is heavily degraded by bump and cross-shore wind. This is the least reliable period; however, short windows of offshore flow can still produce fun sessions, especially when migratory high-pressure systems clear the skies and the trade wind regime temporarily reasserts itself.
