Margaret River's exposed west-south-west coast is a pure product of the Indian Ocean and the relentless westerly storm track of the Southern Ocean. The most consistent and powerful swell window runs from April through September, when average heights climb from 2.0m (6.6ft) in April to a winter peak of 2.8m (9.2ft) in July. Wave periods sit in the 12.8-13.3s range, meaning long-period, powerful groundswell is the norm. The true quality hinges on wind direction: April and May stand out as the sweet spot, when the subtropical ridge is still close enough to supply a high percentage of E/ESE offshore winds while the ocean is already firing.
