Newport is an east-southeast-facing beach, so its best surf comes when the Tasman Sea sends swell from the east quadrant and the wind is blowing offshore out of the west. The annual cycle tilts heavily toward autumn and winter. From April through September, favourable offshore-wind frequency climbs from 33% to a peak of 43% in July, while average swell periods sit in the 9.1-9.5s range. Swell heights hover around 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) and the combination of long-period S/SSE groundswell and clean W/NW flow makes this the most consistent window of the year.
