Whale Beach hits its stride through autumn and winter as the Tasman Sea becomes increasingly active. Mid-latitude lows spinning out of the Southern Ocean send consistent SSE/SE/S groundswell up the New South Wales coast, while the subtropical ridge settles in a position that drives more frequent WSW/W/WNW/NW offshore winds. Ideal wind windows climb from 41% in April to a peak of 62% in July, meaning a much higher percentage of clean, lined-up surf. The average period stretches to 9.5s from May through July, adding real punch to the 3-5ft (1-1.5m) peaks and occasional 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) bombs. Water temps cool from 22°C in April down to 18°C by August, so a 3/2 steamer is the standard winter quiver.
