October: Spring Swing Between Grinding Swell and Seabreeze

October is a transitional month full of promise. The average swell height eases to 7ft (2.2m) while the average period remains a lengthy 12.9s, keeping plenty of power in the water. Swell direction shifts back toward the southwest: SW piles in at 40.1 percent, WSW at 15.4 percent, and SSW at 10.8 percent, while W/WNW energy begins to fade. The waves may be a touch less directional for Yallingup than in winter, but the long-period SW groundswell still wraps into the bay to produce clean, bowling walls on the reefs.

Wind becomes more of a double-edged sword. The ideal offshore window is 19 percent, and mornings often deliver light ESE/SE flow under building high pressure. However, afternoon seabreezes from the W/SW are common, creating lumpy conditions by midday. Air temperatures are on the rise at 16.1 degrees C (min 10.0, max 23.5), water temperature warms to 17.9 degrees C, and rainfall drops to 1.16mm/day. October rewards early sessions and favours surfers willing to work around the daily wind cycle.
