Average wave heights hover between 1.7m and 2.3m, with periods often pushing into the 9-second range, offering punchy, long-period lines that can hold serious size. The downside? Dominant onshore winds from the SW-W quadrants are frequent, spoiling the surface quality. However, when high pressure builds over Scandinavia or a cold front clears out, we see crisp offshore winds from the N to O directions, transforming the A-frame peaks into smooth, hollow waves. While the 'ideal wind' statistic sits around 11-15%, the raw power of the swell and the potential for epic sessions when the planets align makes this the prime time to charge Bantham.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

As the Atlantic storm track begins to shift, swell heights drop to a more modest 1.2-1.4m range, and periods shorten to 7.9-8.5s. The trade-off is a noticeable increase in surfable wind conditions: April boasts a 21% ideal wind window, and May peaks at 22%, with more frequent intervals of clean offshore breezes from the NE and E. These months offer fun, rippable waves for the average surfer, especially on the better sandbanks. September mirrors this transitional feel—the ocean is still warm from summer, and the first whispers of autumn swells begin to stir. While not as powerful as winter, the combination of cleaner conditions and smaller crowds makes for a delightful, grovel-friendly season.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer at Bantham is the calm before the storm—literally. Average swell heights bottom out at a meek 1.0m, with periods around 7.1-7.7s, delivering weak, short-period waves that rarely hold any shape. The onshore wind regime—dominated by SW, WSW, and W flows—ruins what little swell there is, making for messy, choppy conditions. Ideal wind percentages fall to 13-16%, and even the offshore windows (mainly from the NE and E) are often too light to clean up the small, gutless waves. This is the season for a longboard or a foamie, or perhaps a road trip to a more sheltered corner. The summer doldrums are real, but they make the return of autumn all the sweeter.
