The sand-bottom floor spawns a smorgasbord of peaks—rip bowls, quick walls, and playful shoulders—making it approachable for beginners yet still spicy for intermediates. When Ferrugem goes flat, so does most of the coast. Expect dense crowds, especially at the prime takeoff zones, which can test patience. If the lineup feels too packed, slip around to Praia da Barra for a bit more elbow room, but be mindful of river runoff that can tint the water and dampen the stoke. Best Surf Season (May - August)

Winter in the South Atlantic blows new life into Ferrugem. Cold fronts tracking from the southwest generate longer-period swell, and the wind stats respond with the biggest jump of the year - ideal surf wind climbs from 55% in April to 66% in May and peaks at 72% in June. Average periods stretch to 9.6s, just shy of true long-period territory, and average heights sit around 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m). The ESE-facing bight still receives most of its energy from the E/ESE/SE window, while the increasing W/NW offshore flow keeps the lineup cleaner. This is the most consistent, punchy and surfable time of the year.
