Best Surf Season (May - August)

Ilha dos Lobos faces into the east-southeast, so the magic happens when the South Atlantic storm track turns active and sends consistent groundswell into the E-ESE-SE-SSE window. From May through August, average swell heights sit around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m), average periods push past 9 seconds, and post-frontal W/NW flow is at its most frequent. The S/SSE/SE groundswells are firmer and more organized, and the offshore windows are long enough to make the beach genuinely good. This is the core of the year for surfers.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

The transition months are the next best thing. April delivers the first real long-period pulses, while September can produce the biggest average swells of the year. However, the wind field is less consistent in these shoulder periods, and strong NE/ENE trades often put a bump on what would otherwise be a clean south swell. It is a pick-and-choose time: be ready to move when a cold front swings through and backs the wind offshore.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

High summer brings the South Atlantic High back into full control. Persistent E/ENE trade windswell rolls in at shorter periods around 8.2-8.5s, and the W/NW offshore flow is strongly reduced. Average heights still reach 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) at times, but the quality is often poor with onshore texture and lumpy, wind-blown conditions. Fun days exist, especially when a front breaks the pattern, but this is the least consistent season and best suited to those who enjoy a warm-water grovel.
