September: Biggest Swell, Toughest Wind

September posts the largest average swell of the year at a solid 2.0m (6.5ft), but it also has one of the lowest ideal-wind percentages at just 18%. The storm tracks are still active, and the period of 9.2s means plenty of punch. However, the swell direction is less favorable than midwinter: ENE leads at 15.9%, followed by E at 13.2% and ESE at 12.9%. The S component is 10.7% and SSE 11.3%, so the southern groundswell is present but not dominant. The wind data are the real problem: NE reaches 28.4%, and there are strong showings from SSW (13.6%) and SW (9.5%), most likely tied to springtime frontal systems. With only 18% ideal wind, many days are lumpy, blown-out versions of what could be a truly heavy slab. Water temp starts to rise to 17.8°C and air averages 18.2°C. When an offshore N/NW wind day lines up with the S/SSW swell, the size is serious - just be patient and picky.
