Best Surf Season (November - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during the winter months and Martinique's south-southeast-facing beach lines up directly with the dominant S/SSW groundswell trains spun up by powerful extratropical cyclones and Nor'easters tracking off the Eastern Seaboard. Average wave heights sit in the 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) range with punchy 8-9s periods, and the wind rose frequently delivers the cold northwest offshore flow needed to turn lumpy storm surf into clean, rippable peaks. The trade-off is brutal: air temperatures hover below freezing, water temps drop to near 0°C, and winter gear is absolutely essential. This is hardcore Atlantic Canada surfing, but when the stars align, Martinique can be firing.

Fair Surf Season (April & September - October)

The shoulder months offer a more forgiving blend of transitional low-pressure systems and early-season tropical swell. April still sees solid SSW and S groundswell, while September and October bring the first serious autumn storms, plus the lingering threat of Atlantic hurricane swell. Water temperatures are far more tolerable in the 10-15°C range, and the lighter winds in September especially make these months attractive for surfers who want quality without the full Arctic experience. You won't get the consistent size of winter, but the waves are often cleaner and more user-friendly.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer is the doldrums at Martinique. Average wave heights drop to 3-4ft (1-1.2m) and periods fall to the 7-8s range, meaning most days are windswell-driven, small, and onshore. The prevailing wind shifts to the SSW/SW quadrant, which blows directly against the southeast-facing beach and chops up whatever southern fetch arrives. Tropical storms can occasionally light things up, but the climatological reality is a prolonged stretch of groveling, micro waves and bumpy conditions. If you're chasing the best of Martinique, save your energy for the colder months.
