Rosie's Bay seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Pacific roars to life during these months as the Aleutian Low strengthens and sends a steady diet of powerful, long-period westerly swells toward the exposed west-southwest facing beaches of Rosie's Bay. Average swell heights climb to 2.0-2.6m (6.5-8.5ft) with periods of 11.7-12.5s, and the clash between low-pressure systems and a cold continental high over British Columbia produces a favorable window of offshore easterly winds a solid 39-46% of the time. This is the heart of the season for Rosie's Bay.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

As the ocean transitions between winter and summer, Rosie's Bay sees still-rideable but less consistent surf. April and September offer average swells around 1.5-1.9m (5-6ft) with periods near 11.8s, and offshore winds clock in around 33-36% - enough for clean sessions between frontal passages. May is more marginal as the North Pacific storm track retreats, but long-period background swell and occasional late-season lows can still light up the bay.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer puts the brakes on Rosie's Bay. Average swell heights drop to 1.2-1.4m (4-4.6ft) with periods of 11.3-11.4s, and the percentage of ideal offshore winds plummets to 17-23% as persistent onshore westerly/northwesterly sea breezes dominate. The bay becomes small, soft and often wind-chopped - a time for log riding or seeking sheltered spots, while waiting for the first autumn bombs.
