Arica seasonal overview
Arica sits on the edge of the Atacama Desert, facing west-northwest into the south-eastern Pacific, where the cold Humboldt Current keeps water temperatures seasonably cool. The local surf diet is remarkably consistent: long-period SSW-SW groundswell arrives throughout the year, holding average wave heights between 5 and 6ft (1.5-1.8m) and periods in the powerful 12.6-13.7s range. It is not a textbook WNW swell window-true W/WNW pulses are rare-but the long periods give the southwest lines time to wrap into the coast. The catch is that ideal easterly offshore winds are a statistical ghost: every month reports 0% ideal wind. Instead, a persistent WSW-W wind regime, driven by the South Pacific high and the desert's daytime heating, blows onshore/cross-onshore and textures the surface. So at Arica you are never searching for waves; you are searching for a dawn window, a lighter breeze, or a rare easterly blast that cleans up the lines.
Best Surf Season (April - September)
The heart of the season runs from April through September, when the southern-hemisphere winter storm track is most active. Average heights build to 5-6ft (1.7-1.8m), periods stretch to 13.3-13.7s, and the 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) class becomes a major player. These are powerful, long-period groundswells, mainly from the SSW-SW quadrant, that wrap into Arica's west-northwest-facing exposures. Winds are still predominantly WSW/W, so the surf is almost never glassy, but the raw energy is at its best. If you can find a morning lull, this is the window with the most legitimate chance of scoring grinding, punchy Arica surf.
Fair Surf Season (March, October, November)
These shoulder months are the transition periods when the storm track is shifting. March is the warm-up to winter, October and November are the cool-down, and all three feature average heights in the 5-6ft (1.6-1.7m) range with periods around 13.0-13.4s. Swell direction is still dominated by SSW and SW, but the more consistent overhead-plus sets become rarer. Onshore WSW/W winds remain the rule and the ideal offshore score is still zero, so wave quality is average: clean enough early, lumpy by afternoon. These months are good for visitors who want consistent, manageable surf without the full winter load.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
During austral summer, Arica drops to its most mellow state. Average heights settle at around 5ft (1.5m) and periods shorten to 12.6-12.9s. The 3-5ft (1-1.5m) band dominates, and the 6.5ft+ (2m+) portion is only a small fraction of the total. The swell is still mostly long-period SSW-SW, but it has less power and a shorter period, so it doesn't wrap or stand up as well on the WNW-facing beach. The thermal sea breeze is also fully engaged, with WSW/W winds blowing onshore virtually every day and no measurable offshore wind. That leaves a lot of small, bumpy afternoons, but dawn patrol can still produce fun, rippable waves for a shortboard or a fish.
