Today's Surf Conditions at Arica

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Arica sits on the edge of the Atacama Desert, facing west-northwest into the south-eastern Pacific, where the cold Humboldt Current keeps water temperatures seasonably cool. The local surf diet is remarkably consistent: long-period SSW-SW groundswell arrives throughout the year, holding average wave heights between 5 and 6ft (1.5-1.8m) and periods in the powerful 12.6-13.7s range. It is not a textbook WNW swell window-true W/WNW pulses are rare-but the long periods give the southwest lines time to wrap into the coast. The catch is that ideal easterly offshore winds are a statistical ghost: every month reports 0% ideal wind. Instead, a persistent WSW-W wind regime, driven by the South Pacific high and the desert's daytime heating, blows onshore/cross-onshore and textures the surface. So at Arica you are never searching for waves; you are searching for a dawn window, a lighter breeze, or a rare easterly blast that cleans up the lines.

Best Surf Season (April - September)

The heart of the season runs from April through September, when the southern-hemisphere winter storm track is most active. Average heights build to 5-6ft (1.7-1.8m), periods stretch to 13.3-13.7s, and the 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) class becomes a major player. These are powerful, long-period groundswells, mainly from the SSW-SW quadrant, that wrap into Arica's west-northwest-facing exposures. Winds are still predominantly WSW/W, so the surf is almost never glassy, but the raw energy is at its best. If you can find a morning lull, this is the window with the most legitimate chance of scoring grinding, punchy Arica surf.
