Best Surf Season (April – August)

Winter sets in across the Southern Ocean, and the West Coast of New Zealand truly lights up. During these months, a persistent belt of high pressure to the east funnels stable, offshore winds from the SE quadrant over Cobden, combining with a steady diet of long-period W to WSW groundswells. Average wave heights hover around the 2m mark, with periods consistently in the 12-second range, delivering powerful, lined-up waves that wrap nicely into the NW-facing beach. The statistics speak volumes: June and July see ideal wind conditions over 70% of the time, making this a go-to period for consistent, clean surf.

Fair Surf Season (March & September)

Shoulder months offer a blend of promising swells and transitional wind patterns. March still enjoys a 46% rate of favourable winds, while September sees the same, though with slightly larger average swell heights (2.1m). During these months, the battle between lingering summer highs and approaching winter lows can create windows of epic conditions wedged between stormy periods. When it all aligns, expect fun, rippable waves with occasional pumping sets.

Low Surf Season (October – February)

Spring and summer bring a significant drop in surf quality to Cobden. The dominant westerly wind belt shifts north, resulting in a high frequency of onshore W to NW winds that chop up the swell. Ideal wind percentages plummet to just 30–37% from December to February. Although swell energy remains decent – average heights around 1.7m and periods above 11s – the wind more often than not ruins the ride. Early mornings and late evenings offer the best chance of clean conditions, but overall, this is the time to look elsewhere for quality waves.
