Boca Barranca delivers one of Costa Rica’s most iconic long rides, a sweeping left-hand point break that peels for up to 800 yards when the stars align. Situated conveniently close to San José and tucked beneath a major bridge, this rivermouth wave is a favorite for its easy access and dependable shape. Best on a south to southwest swell, it handles chest-high to overhead-plus waves (3 to 8 feet) with grace, especially on low to mid tides. The bottom is a mix of flat rock and sand, holding nicely as a left-hander that offers a little something for everyone—mellow shoulders for longboarders, more critical sections for shortboards, funboards, and fishes. East winds are your friend here, grooming the wave into smooth, long-running lines. Best Surf Season (December - April)

Let's be honest from the start: Boca Barranca does not receive the kind of consistent, grinding surf that most west-facing Costa Rican spots are known for. The beach faces WNW into the Gulf of Nicoya, and the data show an almost permanent diet of small, long-period SSW and S swell that the point simply does not face. That said, the December through April dry season is the closest thing to a 'best' window. Rainfall plummets, the trade winds stabilise, and the average swell period climbs from 10.9s to 14.0s. Wave heights are still tiny-most days hover around 0.2-0.3m (0.7-1ft)-but occasional NE or W-sector pulses can nudge the 0.5-1m (1.6-3.3ft) range. If you're looking for the most pleasant combination of clean, offshore easterly mornings and at least a ripple of long-period energy, this is your season.
