Playa Jacó is the beating heart of Costa Rica’s surf scene—a vibrant beach town where the line between land and sea blurs into a seamless, laid-back lifestyle. Right in the center of it all, the beach is your backyard, putting you steps from the action and all the creature comforts of town. This is a place where the surf, sand, and social energy converge, drawing a mix of seasoned locals and wide-eyed travelers alike. The wave here is a classic beachbreak—consistently peeling over a sandy bottom, offering both left and right-hand rides that make it a fantastic playground for all levels. When the swell pumps from the south and southwest, Jacó comes alive, with waves starting to show at just 1 foot and building from there. The magic happens under a northeast wind, which grooms the surface into clean, fun lines. And with all tides producing rideable surf, you’re never left waiting long for a session. Best of all, this is a go-to spot for beginners and intermediate surfers looking to level up without getting thrashed. It’s a more forgiving alternative to the heavier freight trains at nearby Hermosa, offering plenty of gentle, manageable peaks to hone your skills. Yes, it can get crowded—especially on the best peaks—but there’s always a stretch of sand or a quieter corner to call your own. Keep your eyes on the conditions, paddle out with patience, and let Jacó’s easygoing rhythm guide your session.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (December - March)

Playa Jaco is a southwest-facing beach that gets plenty of South Pacific groundswell, but the quality of the surf is decided by the wind. During the dry season the North Pacific High builds across Central America, generating the classic Papagayo offshore flow that spills over the mountains and gives Jaco frequent clean winds from the N, NNE, NE and ENE. The swell averages 1.0-1.1m (3-3.5ft) with long periods of 12-13s, so waves are generally in the fun, rippable 3-4ft range with the occasional overhead set. This is not the biggest surf of the year, but it is by far the cleanest and most consistent.
