Playa Esterillos remains one of Costa Rica’s last holdouts of laid-back, undeveloped charm, though the recent hum of construction is slowly shifting that vibe. Esterillos Oeste dishes out a versatile menu of waves that caters to everyone from foam-riding beginners to seasoned tube hounds. The beach faces due south, where scattered reef sections mingle with long, sandy stretches, unfurling into miles of beachbreak. When the stars align, multiple A-frame peaks spring to life, drawing surfers from near and far. Wave shape here is a dynamic dance between shifting sandbars and scattered reef bumps. As the tide pushes and pulls, one peak can shut down just as another fires up nearby—locals often paddle from a reef source to a sand-bottom wedge without missing a beat. This spot evolves fast, making local knowledge a serious advantage. On the northwest fringe, a handful of reefs offer mellow, glide-worthy lines perfect for longboarders chasing drawn-out rides. During the May-to-October swell season, bigger pulses arrive, and some surfers even charge the outer reefs on tow setups. Esterillos Oeste performs best on mid-to-high tides, known for producing hollow, racetrack A-frames—especially at the beloved peak called El Pico. On a good day, you’ll find a near-perfect blend of wedges and walls. Crowds ebb and flow, but with enough peaks scattered across the zone, there’s usually room to breathe. The local crew keeps things relaxed; a respectful attitude goes a long way in the water. Head south from Esterillos Centro toward Bejuco, and you’ll uncover additional beachbreak zones with their own unique rhythms. Just keep in mind that when the swell cranks, currents can get strong and sneaky—so arrive with some experience under your belt before paddling out.

Best Surf Season (December - April)

For a south-facing beach like Esterillos, the surf calendar is shaped by the clash between southern-hemisphere swell and tropical wind regimes. The best window spans December through April, when the ITCZ shifts south and drier trade-wind weather takes over. While the average swell height is a modest 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m), the period remains in the 12.3-14.0s range, meaning even small pulses hold real power. Just as important, offshore flow from the north through northwest quadrant becomes more frequent, especially in January, February and March, grooming long-period SSW/SW groundswell into clean, rippable walls. This is the classic dry-season surf season, with warm sunshine, lower rainfall and reliable morning glass.
