San Blas seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - October)
The heart of the surf year at San Blas arrives with the Central American green season. As the South Pacific winter storm track shifts into high gear, a steady diet of long-period SSW groundswell pushes into this SSW-facing beach. Average surf heights peak at 4-5ft (1.3-1.4m) with periods in the 13-14s range, and the swell direction is extraordinarily consistent: S/SSW/SW/WSW account for 95-100% of the wave energy. While the ITCZ makes the winds a bit more variable than in winter, June and July still deliver 53-62% ideal offshore wind, and the classic morning N/NE offshore flow keeps the lineup clean well into the day. The water is warm at 30°C and the tropics are in full bloom - short afternoon storms add texture to the sky but rarely shut down the surf.
Fair Surf Season (April and November)
These are transition months in every sense. April sees some of the longest-period swell of the year at 14.1s and an extraordinary 85.6% of energy from the SSW, but ideal wind drops to 40% as the sea breeze strengthens. November, by contrast, still has autumn's SSW pulse at 4ft (1.2m), and the offshore wind score jumps back up to 62%, but the period settles slightly to 12.7s. Expect a mix of world-class clean mornings and lumpy, wind-affected afternoons - pick your windows carefully.
Low Surf Season (December - March)
The dry season is the slowest stretch for wave size, not wave quality. Average heights drop to 3-3.5ft (1.0-1.1m) as the South Pacific storm track loosens its grip, and the period eases to 12.1-13.4s. The compensation is the most reliable offshore wind regime of the year, with N/NNE/NE/ENE flow present enough to keep ideal surfing windows at 47-66%. San Blas rarely goes flat - long-period SSW remnants and occasional southern hemi wrap keep the beach alive - but you will be working for the reform on smaller days.
